The Coming Bull Market in Green Investing - VirtualMuch has been written about the trend toward the use of alternative sources of power (solar, wind, fuel cells, etc.) and the adaption of clean technologies that are environmentally friendly. Many of the companies providing these products are either little known smaller operations in the United States or are located in Europe or Asia. Therefore, investing in this space is very difficult for the average retail investor. There is an inexorable movement towards these 'green' technologies based in part upon our need to end our dependence on fossil fuels and in part because these companies represent the best opportunity to create millions of higher paying jobs in the United States. Investing in new technologies can be very risky as, in the early stages, it is unclear which of these new products will become commercially viable. One can liken this period to the early stages of the development of the internet. Several search engine companies were formed, Google survives. There were a number of different browsers, but only a few exist today. Hosting companies, server farms, internet service providers and dotcoms sprung up like weeds. Most failed but those that made it became spectacularly successful. When Amazon went public in May of 1997 it had an initial market capitalization of $450 million; today its market cap is $60 billion. An investor would have done well to buy baskets of companies in each of the key sectors. The few winners would have more than made up for all the losers. Unfortunately, there were no such baskets back then. Today, there are Exchange Traded Funds which allow us to access the new technologies in an optimal way. There are clean tech funds, alternative energy funds and infrastructure funds. To date, these funds have attracted less than $1 billion of assets but there is every indication that this is just the beginning of a long term trend. Investors should recognize the opportunity to invest in a megatrend that will be as large as the internet but with a superior investment vehicle which offers exposure to innovation with mitigation of single stock risk. This LIVE online session will explore and describe these ETFs as well as describe some of the revolutionary technologies being developed by the portfolio companies. | ||||||||||||||||||||
